Home About History Louise Beard Memorial Events Projects Contact Us The First Annual Firecracker 5K and Fun Run/Walk, scheduled for September 5, 2020, is canceled after the Newport Borough Council voted on August 4, 2020 to rescind their approval of the use of Borough streets and property. The Firecracker Planning Committee sincerely regrets that this fundraiser will not be held. Canal Day Update The board of the Newport Revitalization and Preservation Society has voted to cancel this year’s Canal Day, which was scheduled for October 3, 2020. This decision was made with sadness, as this event has steadily grown and improved thanks to our terrific vendors and supportive community. We begin preparing for Canal Day in March and the start of the pandemic prevented us from mailing vendor applications. We have been monitoring state guidelines and other community events since that time. Although Perry County is currently in the green phase, it is impossible to know restrictions that may be in place in the fall. In addition, even under the green phase public gatherings of more than 250 people are prohibited. Given these factors, and our concern for the community and vendors, we made the difficult decision to cancel. Please plan to join us at Canal Day on October 2, 2021. During the year off, we will work to expand offerings at the event. welcomes visitors and residents to explore all our town has to offer by browsing the diverse businesses and organizations based in Newport. Explore them on the Welcome to Newport page. Veterans' Memorial Park The Veterans' Memorial Park Project is the second phase of Grandma's Plus Playground Project. Phase One of the project was completed by a dedicated team throughout 2010. Read more about our ongoing efforts on the Projects page. Receives Grant from PPL Foundation The Newport Revitalization and Preservation Society is proud to announce that we have been awarded a $30,000 grant from the PPL Foundation for continued improvements at the Newport Veterans Park. Upgrading and renovating the Park has been our major initiative for several years. This grant will allow to continue with the next phase of Park improvements for Newport residents. We thank the PPL Foundation for featuring the Park on PPL Currents . PPL is committed to supporting communities across its 29-county service area and providing tools that help empower economic vitality. The PPL Foundation awards grants in spring and fall. The next grant cycle, for sustaining grants that assist organizations with general operating expenses, begins in January. Interested organizations can apply for grants from $1,000 to $25,000. Buy a Brick We are currently accepting orders for personalized bricks that border the sidewalks throughout the square. Find more information and an order form on the Buy a Brick page. Limited edition bricks honoring Newport Celebrates 175 are also still available. The brick features the Celebration's logo with three lines of customized text. The cost is $65.
